How to Manually Read a Ferrari VIN Number

If you know what you’re looking for and where to look, a Ferrari’s VIN number can tell you some information about the vehicle on a quick glance.

We’ll go over some of the key pieces of information you can learn by referring to specific digits and sets of digits within the VIN.

Manufacture Location & Assembly Plant

With Ferrari, location and assembly plant are fairly easy. You don’t even really need a VIN to tell you this.

But, to break it down further:

  • The first 3 digits represent the WMI, or Word Manufacturer Identifier.
  • The 11th digit tells you the code for the specific assembly plant.

Most Ferrari VINs will begin with ZFF, which stands for:

  • 1st Character “Z”: Italy.
  • 2nd Character “F”: Ferarri.
  • 3rd Character “F”: Vehicle Type, Passenger Vehicle.

The 11th character will tell you the assembly plant. For every Ferrari, this will be:

  • 0: Maranello Assembly Plant.

Ferrari Model VIN Codes

Depending on the specific year your Ferrari was made you can look up the model in either the 4th and 5th digits or the 6th and 7th digits of the VIN.

Ferrari models are coded by double digit numerical codes.

If the 4th-7th characters of the VIN follow a “XX00” format, the model code can be found in the two numbers in position 6-7.

If the 4th-7th characters of the VIN follow a “00XX” format, the model code can be found in the two numbers in position 4-5.

In either case, the model codes used will be the same.
