How to Read the VIN Number on a Jeep

You can learn a lot about your Jeep by just looking at the VIN.

The first digit will tell you where your Jeep was produced. It may read:

  • 1, 4: United States.
  • J: Japan.

The second digit tells you the manufacturer (J = Jeep).

The third digit gives you information about the vehicle type.

Characters 4-8 will include information about the specific model, body style, transmission, engine, and other features.

The 9th character is a security check that’s used to verify that each VIN is accurate and valid.

Character 10 tells you the Jeep’s model year.

The 11th character will tell you which specific assembly plant where your Jeep was made. This could include:

  • T: Toluca, Mexico.
  • D: Belvidere, Illinois.
  • C, 8: Detroit, Michigan.
  • L, W: Toledo, Ohio.

Characters 12-17 represent the Jeep’s production sequence or serial number. This combination will be unique to each individual vehicle.
