How to Read a KTM VIN

You can find out some quick information just by looking at your KTM’s VIN number.

Refer to the key below to decode yours.

First 3 Characters: KTM Word Manufacturer Identifier (WMI)

The first 3 digits of the VIN tell you where the bike was manufactured, who made it, and what type of vehicle it is.

For KTM, a common combination is:

  • 1st Character: V for Austria.
  • 2nd Character: B for KTM.
  • 3rd Character: K for motorcycle.

If your KTM has a VIN that starts with PNG, you’ll know that your bike was manufactured in India rather than Austria.

Characters 4 through 8: Vehicle Description Section (VDS)

Characters 4 through 8 of the VIN provide information about the model, engine, Horsepower, and other features.

Characters 4-5 typically represent the class of bike, and may include:

  • MX.
  • EX.
  • GS.

The 6th character represents the HP of the bike, the higher the letter, the more horsepower the model has.

The 7th digit represents whether it’s a 2 stroke or 4 stroke motorcycle. You may see:

  • 2, T: Two Stroke.
  • 4, F: Four Stroke.

The 8th digit represents whether the bike is made for off-road or highway use. You may see:

  • 3: Off-road.
  • 0: Highway.
